Some frequently asked questions…

Newborns

When is the best time to photograph newborns?

The very best time for artistic newborn photography is the span of time from 6 days to two weeks old. Babies are more pliable, still retaining much of their natural curl from the womb. They are also less prone to newborn acne and sleep for longer durations of time.

How long do sessions last?

Please allow at least two hours for your newborn session – we will change sets and elements several times and baby will need time for changes, feedings and a little relaxation in between!

What is your style?

My style for newborns fuses a very clean, fine art look with an earthy, nature-infused style. Whenever possible, I love shooting outdoors and always utilize natural light. I am constantly stocking new elements for my newborn sessions: handmade coccoons, knitted hats, soft wraps, artisan baskets, ceramic bowls, vintage furnishings. All items are stored in a smoke and pet free environment. Fabric items are laundered after each use with hypoallergenic detergent.

Children

What is your approach to photographing children?

I approach each session with both open mind and eyes! Children are unique and special individuals. I don’t believe in pre-set formulas or poses – I strive to present each family with images tailored to their child. At the beginning of sessions, I like to spend a little time getting to know my subject and allowing him/her to become comfortable around me as a person first, photographer next. While I shoot plenty of “camera aware” portraits, I also document all of the laughter, movements, and tiny details that comprise a personality. My ultimate goal is to capture the real child, whether quirky, active, or elegant!

Are pets allowed in sessions?

Yes, please! I am very animal friendly and would delight in meeting your pet! The addition of your pet makes portraits even more personal and sentimental.

What are your favorite types of locations?

I am exclusively a location photographer – my work tends to be very nature infused and I feel that the environment adds to the essence of my subjects. My style lends itself well to fields, forests, gardens, pastures, and parks. Cityscapes can also be wonderful settings, especially when working to achieve a vintage, black & white style. I also offer service to clients’ local homes as well.

Can you make clothing suggestions?

First and foremost, dress your children in a manner that refelcts the real them! Kids are most likely to be their true selves when they are totally comfortable and clothing is a big part of that equation. Clothing that is classic tends to shoot better than ultra trendy clothing. Outfits should be stain and wrinkle free. Layers, accessories, and textures can make an otherwise ordinary photograph a stunning one. Scarves, hats, belts, vests, and mittens make wonderful accessories – don’t be afraid to mix and match! Siblings being photographed together should coordinate in general style and color, but not match identically. High School Seniors

What is your general style and concept for senior sessions?

My style is very relaxed and natural. My photos focus on the subject and the environment – I do not rely upon the special effects and graphics which give the majority of senior pictures a very cookie cutter look. Earlier in my career, I worked in Minneapolis, New York City, and San Francisco as a fashion photographer – my portraiture tends to relect those roots. I like poses that do not look like poses and I love capturing honesty and personality. I feel that people should look like themselves in a photo and should love that photo for years to come, not just momentarily.

Clothing suggestions?

Bring your favorite outfits! People look happiest and most alive and vibrant in clothing that they love. Please note that outfit selections must be approved by parents/guardians and must be in general good taste (no advertisements for drugs, alcohol, or tobacco).

Are pets, friends, family welcome?

Yes! High school seniors who shoot with me are welcome to include any of the above in their sessions. Seniors frequently include siblings, best friends, and significant others in some of their photos. Parents are welcome and encouraged to be present for the entire session.

When are senior sessions available?

Location senior sessions are most popular during summer and fall. Sessions are available on weekdays and occasionally on Sundays. Due to the unpredictable nature of weather, sessions sometimes need to be rescheduled. Appointments are typically available within a few days of the original shoot date.
